Date clash: AIIMS, PGI stick to entrance exam schedules

September 20, 2012

Refusing to resolve the date clash row, two premier medical institutes of the country – All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh – have decided to stick to their respective entrance examination schedule.

Both institutes have scheduled their entrance examination for admission to MD/MS courses on November 18, putting a lot of candidates in a fix. The academic session in both cases will start in January 2013.

The tough stand taken by both institutes has limited the options of a large number of medical graduates.

Talking to Hindustan Times on the phone, Dr AK Dinda, sub-dean (examination), AIIMS, said they couldn’t change the examination date as AIIMS was a much bigger institute than PGIMER. “At least 50,000 candidates appear in our examination, which takes place in five cities,” he said.

The AIIMS entrance examination is conducted in Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Guwahati. In contrast, around 6,000 students appear for around 200 seats at PGIMER.

Dr Dinda said it was easy for PGIMER to reschedule the entrance examination as it was conducted at only one centre (Chandigarh).

He said they had written to the union health ministry to ask PGIMER to revise the examination date.

Both institutes are autonomous bodies established by a special act of Parliament. Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is the president of both bodies.

The PGIMER authorities have already said that they can’t change the date as the examination is scheduled a year in advance. PGIMER spokesperson Manju Wadwalkar said AIIMS should do the needful as it had recently announced the examination schedule.
