Police cane charge violent doctors in UP

September 5, 2012

Junior doctors in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh resorted to violence, damaged cars and thrashed people, forcing police to cane charge them, after some of their colleagues were bashed by relatives of a patient who died during treatment, officials said.

Violence broke out at the Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College and Hospital in Gorakhpur when news spread that some medics were bashed by relatives of a patient, who died earlier in the day.

Hundreds of junior doctors fanned out in the medical college and beat up everyone who came in their way.

As the doctors went on rampage and damaged many cars parked in the campus, police was summoned by the administration and the policemen had to resort to cane charging to disperse the unruly mob of doctors.

Superintendent of Police (SP) City Paresh Pandey told IANS that more than a dozen vehicles were damaged in the melee. A heavy police team has been deployed in the medical college and the situation is under control.
