Dr Ketan Desai gets clean chit from CBI in DA case

August 17, 2012

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has given a clean chit to Dr Ketan Desai, former chairman of the Medical Council of India (MCI), in the disproportionate assets (DA) case, which relates to allegations of a bribe of Rs 2 crore paid by a medical college in Punjab.

Dr Desai was arrested by the CBI in April 2010, on allegations of corruption over recommending a medical college in Punjab for permission to admit 100 students to a 4th batch, with a large number of deficiencies.

The CBI recently filed a closure report in the DA case before the designated court in New Delhi, which is expected to give its verdict shortly. The CBI has also filed a report in the competent court stating that the medical college had all requisite facilities barring an auditorium.

A high-level committee, set-up under the chairmanship of the additional secretary for health, to examine the validity of the MCI’s recommendation for the college in question submitted its report in May 2010, which stated that the permission recommended by the MCI was justified.
